Black ink and white paper elicit endless expressions from our consciousness.
In a space with nothing but just black and white, there are lands, mountains, roads, and stars in the night sky.
when i hold a brush and write,
I could clear my head. I feel the joy of holding a brush, of writing.
and of expressing something. I genuinely feel happiness in them.
Letters are the core of calligraphy’s identity.
After I dis-carded the complete letter shapes and texts that are difficult to read and understand, I finally noticed the latent artistic merit of calligraphy. From a new way of combining symbolic forms by dismantling letters, I observed the tension and formative beauty between the brushstorkes and space, which are the fundamental principles of calligraphy.
The spirituality and tension of brushstrokes,
which are earned form holding a brush upright, some room to communicate through minds by removing the frames of letters. This resembles the meaning of ‘not through the written words’, a quote from Buddhist scriptures. ‘In order to enlighten the truth, you should see the true nature through one’s mind, not through teachers’ spoken nor written words.’ I finally found a way to communicate beyond letters, not obstinately held up to the texts which people still find hard to understand.
I gaze at a white sheet of paper with a brush in my hand,
What for does art exist? What defines beauty?
Who sets the bar? Who can creticize? Who can be a role model?
Is it only for my satisfaction? I’m not looking for answers.
It’s like I am standing in a maze feeling selflessness.
